It’s well known that globally some genders are already being radically more affected by climate change than others. How we define them and what differences climate policies include, will be the starting point of our conversation.
It’s not only because they face increasingly severe threats to their health, livelihood and safety as climate change worsens. Climate policy responses themselves can have unintended negative gendered impacts when they do not take this context into account.
Barriers to participation of women and other groups affected by inequalities and discrimination need to be recognised in our daily practices, and then removed to ensure everyone can fully contribute to climate actions. But how do we achieve this in a world where patriarchy is reversing hard-won gender rights?
